How public safety is using satellite today
Public safety can deploy their own satellite-capable assets to provide on-the-go coverage. Deployables are available for purchase. They allow agencies to create mobile cell sites in remote or rural areas when connectivity is not available.
Agencies on FirstNet can request support from the Response Operations Group™ (ROG) at no additional cost. You have access to the only dedicated fleet of 190+ satellite-capable deployables to help you stay mission-ready in planned events or in moments of crisis.
When fiber and other local infrastructure is damaged, we use satellite backhaul at the cell site to provide an alternate path to FirstNet. This keeps you connected to the critical information you need with always-on priority across nearly 3 million square miles nationwide.

How will direct-to-device satellite work with FirstNet?
FirstNet is built for public safety’s mission needs. That’s why we’re designing satellite connectivity via FirstNet to give first responders unique benefits and capabilities like mission-critical push-to-talk. These features are designed to set the terrestrial FirstNet network apart from non-public safety networks.
Satellite-to-device connectivity is planned to complement and extend the reach of the FirstNet network for first responders in rural or off-grid locations. It will help them stay connected after disasters or during emergencies. We’re excited to continue our work with the FirstNet Authority to explore how satellite will be used in public safety communications and bring new capabilities to first responders on America’s public safety network.
How is the federal government investing in satellite broadband communication for public safety?
To support future satellite-to-device capabilities the FirstNet Authority is making strategic investments to upgrade the FirstNet network core. These upgrades, such as priority and preemption on Band 14 and mission-critical push-to-talk go beyond what ordinary commercial networks have to offer public safety.
What devices will support FirstNet Satellite?
At launch, the service will focus on recent smartphones and feature push-to-talk phones that the majority of our public safety agencies already carry. As the network expands, additional devices will be added to support satellite, including High Power User Equipment HPUE and data-only devices.
Will AST SpaceMobile replace our current satellite solutions?
No, this solution will be a complement to our existing solutions. Additionally, many devices (for example, iPhone 14+ and Pixel 9+) already support satellite messaging in emergency situations.
What existing satellite solutions are available with FirstNet?
FirstNet uses satellite providers including Starlink, OneWeb, ViaSat, Amazon LEO, Inmarsat and more for deployable solutions. In addition, we have other non-satellite coverage solutions options, like FirstNet MegaRange™ and AT&T Cell Booster Pro.

Will FirstNet Satellite be available in all areas?
Initial service is focused on the contiguous United States.
How much does FirstNet Satellite cost?

When will FirstNet Satellite be available for customers?
It’s still too early to give a specific date for general availability, but FirstNet Satellite service is planned to come later this year. When it arrives, it’ll deliver unique benefits and capabilities that set the terrestrial FirstNet network apart from non-public safety networks. For example, priority and pre-emption and mission-critical services for first responders.
